Steps to a Website

Hey well I know I missed my workinprogress presentation, or my midterm for the website. But that doesnt mean I wasnt working on it. I just didnt know where I was going with it. Initially I was going to dedicated a site to my daughter, and her love for frogs, but I could use flash properly to animate the images how I wanted.

So after that I decided to just go ahead and practice the flash I do know, and I made a nice page with some buttons, but did not interface it with my site until recently.

As of later this evening my site will be completely presentable. One hundred per cent hand woven web. take some time and explore because it is a thorough mess. I took some of the feedback from my presentation and decided to scrap the idea of 'simplicity' and 'user-friendliness' in favour of the kind of barely coherent emmergent-mess-logic that determines most of my life. Hopefully it will keep growing so feel free to keep improving my grade.

Building Barbie

I think the virtual Barbie doll idea is quite interesting; so, I thought I'd post some links for anyone who is interested in building this kind of interactive, layer-based project.

Kisekae Dolls are basically the online equivallent of those punch out paper dolls with the clothing you attatch by folding down the flaps. Otaku World, once you get past the over abundance of pink, has some good links to free KiSS creation software, KiSS viewers, and tutorials. Although you need to download a viewer to interact with the dolls, the actual dolls are created within a progam like Photoshop, using layers, and are then given KiSS compatable file extensions; you could easily import your layers into Flash instead. Otaku World's KiSS resources can be found here

Another interesting site is GaiaOnline, which is an online community that revolves around avatar customization. Posting to the forum, participating in polls, playing games, and just navigating the site earns you virtual gold, which you can then use to purchase clothing, jewelry, and other objects for your avatar. It's a huge waste of time, and predominately populated by the 13-16 age demographic (some of whom do quite a diservice to the way their peer group is percieved) but it's also distubingly addictive. Whatever, maybe I'm just a huge loser.

More interesting though are some of the online tools that have been created for GaiaOnline; specifically, the Gaia Dream Creator. The Dream Creator is an avatar simulator that allows you to make your "dream avatar" to use as part of your signature (text or images automatically attatched to the bottom of forum posts) within the Gaia community. This program is neat because it uses JavaScript, rather than Flash, which basically allows you to make changes to a page's content without refreshing or linking. webmonkey has some decent tutorials on JavaScript, as well as HTML and Java.

My section of the seminar consists mainly of an example of gaming culture. I decided a computer game I like called Battlefield 2 would be a good as example as any. Its an online game that simulates warzone battle in different maps, and as the player gains points they move up through military "ranks", starting at Private and ending with General. Players are divided into two teams and play on maps that resemble desert and marshland conditions. A player joins a server to play with other people, and can also play with friends. Programs like Xfire and Teamspeak allow people on the same server to communicate, and even see which servers their friends are on to join in game play.

EA Games created Battlefield 1945, Battlefield 2, Battlefield Special Forces, among many other games popular with online communities. Within Battlefield 2 its possible to rent your own server and allow other people to play on it. There are sites available that you can type in your player name and all of your game statistics will be provided. There are even leaderboards in which you can monitor your friends progress as well as your own. People can also interact within the game by joining each others squads, using the chat option in the game, riding in the same vehicles... etc.

Web sites, regardless of their simplicity, allow the author the same kind of control over their site's content as a photographer or painter or film director has over their art. In the same way that a photographer chooses how to crop an image, what to include and what to leave out, the site developer is afforded control over how that image is interpreted by an audience. The focus of my seminar is the human-computer modalities through which we mediate and interpret reality.

Web Cams are one of the simplest examples of web-based mediation of reality because they deal with physical rather than virtual space.

Hi folks - for any of you who are finishing up today or over reading week, here is a recipe that should help you complete the assignment --

CREATING A BUTTON WITH SOUND IN FLASH / A recipe by Judith

We will create a button that plays a sound when you roll over it. When you roll out, the sound will stop.

Create a shape then MODIFY → CONVERT TO SYMBOL → GRAPHIC (name)

INSERT → NEW SYMBOL → BUTTON (name)

Drag and drop an instance of your graphic into the UP frame. Then INSERT → TIMELINE → KEYFRAME to the over, down and hit frames.

(You can create visual changes or use different graphics, pictures or movie clips in the “up” “over” and “down” positions, to create lively effects prompted by mouse actions. And remember – by turning the alpha to zero, you can make the button invisible!)

CLICK ON “Scene 1” to return to the canvas. Drag an instance of your button from the LIBRARY onto the STAGE.

Now you will name your button. Open the property inspector WINDOW → PROPERTIES

In the INSTANCE NAME box, type a name (ActionScript relies on these names to identify objects)

Now we will add a BEHAVIOR to the button.

First, make sure the instance of your button on stage is selected.

Go to WINDOWS → DEVELOPMENT PANELS → BEHAVIORS. Click on the + sign to add a behavior → SOUND → STOP ALL SOUNDS

Click the default word “RELEASE” and change to “ON ROLL OUT”. This will make the sound stop when the cursor rolls out of the hit area.

I feel its a good starting presentation as it gives some history and fundamental thinking on digital processes(algorithms), and the replacement of analogue ones(algorithms). N JoI. plz?

For my final project, I would like to make a website that focuses on using flash animation, as well as incorporating text. I am not sure exactly what I would like to do, I'm having a hard time thinking of something :( so far I have two rough ideas:

The first one that I would like to propose is perhaps to build a website that gives information about a social issue such as child abuse. I would want to set up the website, so that it starts with a short animation and then a menu would pop up that would allow you to learn some facts by clicking on the different issues.

The second idea that I have for this project is to focus on how different religions, cultures and the media play a role on the way women represent themselves. For example, in Islamic countries women are seen as always wearing a veil, and to some it is thought of as a form of oppression, in Christianity, women are seen to be less oppressed. I would think that I want to include animation that is perhaps more text based and I would want to have a menu pop up with different options to click on that would cover different aspects of this issue.

Gallery688 – This will be the internet component for a gallery I am opening with some friends. It will be a highly conceptual effort (man-oh-man will it ever !!), and one in which I do not intend to get into the details of at this time… though basically, it’s a gallery that exists in this glass china cabinet thing that is in my kitchen.

The Website itself will be left simple (ie: a display of the entire cabinet, plain as paper). Each section (or artist/designer/craft person’s display) will be clickable, and lead to something of that creator’s choice (either a more detailed/closer view of content, a link to their site or anything else they would like to put inside it), while the 688 logo (still needs to be fixed, uprooted, moved around) will click to information about the site, the operation and things related to the gallery space. Or porn. The End.

for my project i would like to use flash and html to create a webspace that would hold photographic imagery and journal entries. weekly photographs will be taken to document the personal spaces- of others and my own. the journal entries will be done by those whose spaces are photographed and will serve as a direct link to events that each person has gone through over the course of the week and will elucidate any changes(if any)in the specific space photographed. i find that my personal space and its many 'states' are heavily related to events that occur in my daily life. i think it would be interesting to see and relate how other people cope with daily stresses- of any sort, big or small.

The most important part of this project is to find the happy medium between having an entertaining research and presentation aspect along with a responsible research method. I do not want to get carried too far off track, but my topic is currently broad and covers many aspects of post-production media. I guess first, compositing and FX should be understood as the horizontal version of editing. Images are placed upon images within 3D-Z space (aka forward/backward). Within compositing you can add any type of media too.

As of now I think I will major my topic's scope on FX post-production. Thus, I will show the final product and the process involved to get there. This is because people are always interested in peeking behinde the currtin. Also I feel compositing is the way you compile the "data" and therefore not my central idea.

As for my personal site, I am on the fence on whether I will add a blog to document my process of Special FX in the film I am working on. I do not want to completely ignore my process work either. I think I am going to critique the work that's out there and go over the more interesting concepts through development and application.

I won't go too graphics heavy with my site, within the levels of design, because that is not my interest. I am more concerned about content and organization of that content... aka ease of use.

So this is the baby steps involved in what I will introduce to all of you guys, and I hope you enjoy this process.

This is the International Movie Database, probably the largest information site on films, television shows, actors, actresses, etc. Basically anything that was ever on television, this site gives you information on it that you won't find anywhere else.

2. www.filmforce.net
Another movie site, doesn't give as much information but it mostly up to date on any information about the most popular movies to come out within the year.

3. www.apple.com
Excellent website to find information on the latest technology in apple hardware and software. They have videos on the capabilities of each new piece of software, along with price and upgrades. It also branches off into other similar sections of multimedia.

Indecent Proposal

So here's what I'm thinking of doing for my final assignment;

Working in the back room of a thrift store, one of my favourite things is when people donate old notebooks and binders which (whether they realize it or not, I'm not sure) usually contain a lot pf pages with notes, scribbles, doodles, names and phone numbers, To-Do lists, bad high school poetry, and other such musings. I collect these and scrapbook the good ones. So, for my final assignment I think I would like to create an online scrapbook of these orphaned pages, which I will entitle "Lost & Found".

Timeline:
I can have all of the content assembled by mid-Febuary, and the basic HTML in place by the beginning of March. Then it will be a question of scanning, resizing, and placing the images within the format of the pages themselves.

In this situation, the user would move the cursor around the environment and when they pass over various isolated segments (ex. the clock), that part of the screen would become activated in some way (change size or colour?) and a window of information would appear.

Here images would be dragged into a middle section to form a collaged whole. In this case, the user makes a unique animal constructed of parts of different animals.

Seems like I'll be needing to get to know Flash...

Possible Flash Project: Dacia the Dress up Dolly

Here's a (very) rough idea of a possible flash project that I'd like to do for this class. When I was a kid, I used to play with paper dolls because I'm a girly queer. So, I've decided to make an electronic dress up doll, Dacia, who I will create through hand drawing and photoshop. She will be in her underwear and when you click on a woman's portrait, she will be dressed in clothing well-known to that woman. Here's a rough sketch of what the layout and imagery may look like.

A very intelligent program that shares bandwidth with every user to make dl time more reliable and faster. Its like FTP for its reliablity but like Kazaa for its easy accesability. - basically, a site posting video and shorts of a comedy troupe; full of content to browse, view... it's some pretty good satire.
(i recommend awesometown and the stork patrol thing).

- the website for a periodical mag/book, but the site's content is something completely separate (though some people on it write for the paper'd publication as well). the site has a long archives of short stories, and is updated with new ones pretty much everyday. though some articles/posts/lists/stories are awful and conventional, there is also a lot of really great. funny, and satirical stuff on it... and everthing is made short (so you can get through a read pretty quick). blah.

^these are interesting to me for content and not so-much interface, and i don't know exactly how they will translate to what i'm doing...^

So, I've noticed that one thing all my sites have in common is that they all have a level of simplicity whether it's in the design/artwork, the humour, or in the games.

Font Fetish has very simple games with bondage-like sounds.

Ebaum's World contains some very simple flash animations and primitive humour which seems to really make me laugh for some reason. I find the music videos "Bang Bang Bang", "2 Many Guyz", and "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" particularly funny.

Tokyo Plastic's design is so minimal but so effective with it's use of sound! It proves the point that less really is more.

Hi, I'm Emily. Because I'm a non-major student with a focus in integrated media, I'm always looking for ways to combine my interests. Recently I have been developing a series of prototypes that incorporate both fashion and electronics, and I would like to use this course to further this body of work. Subsequently, my links are related to wearable technology to give you a better idea of what inspires me; hopefully you'll find them interesting as well.

International Fashion Machines is a company that develops electronic interactive textiles; check out their colour change textile artworks.

Material ConneXion is a resource for people in the industry of material art and design; it is the largest global database of new materials, and a wonderful source of inspiration for anyone interested in wearable technology. Unfortunately, you need to be a member to access the library, but it's well worth a look around the next time you're in New York city.

Philip Worthington is an integrated media artist who works with technology in some very interesting ways. Check out his Wearable Warnings and Shadow Monsters projects.

And, although it's not really related to wearable technology, Scott Haefner's Kite Arial Photography is interesting to me because it incorporates technology in an innovative way. His work is relevant and engaging as both art and as an unconventional perspective on photographic technology.

A is for Apple
At times this site feels a little too busy for my taste -I would find myself frantically clicking all around the screen -and like it could cause seizures in some people, but I appreciate its premise and structure. David Clark is an artist ‘interested in coincidence and interconnectivity of information and images’ who wanted to make a website wherein the design is intrinsic to its meaning.
The site seems to reflect how our minds organize information and how this might cause an information-based technology like the Internet to be structured. As far as my own project, I would like to incorporate Clark’s diagrammatic approach and his use of collage.
The net structure of A is for Apple got me thinking about family trees. It’s just a kernel of an idea at this point, but I would like to look into making a narrative/character based site that is organized along genealogical lines. For example, the main page could be a network of photo portraits and clicking them would lead the user into fictional (?) accounts of the characters’ lives and relationships to each other. If anyone knows of a site like this, lemme know.
So I did some research on "family trees" using trusty old Google.
A nice one.

The last site relates to my own project in a more roundabout way, or maybe not at all, but I think some of you might find the ideas interesting. The Still Camera Festival has been largely organized and publicized through the connection between personal blogs. The idea behind the festival is to get people to make time-based art using the video function on their small scale digital cameras or cellphones. The ubiquitous nature of the technology being used and the casual way the event is being promoted makes the task less intimidating than it might be otherwise, which has created a lot of participation.
